Fire Extinguisher Maintenance

Fire extinguishers are portable devices used to extinguish or control fires in emergencies. The types of fire extinguishers vary based on the fire type and the extinguishing agent used. Maintenance of fire extinguishers is a vital process to ensure their readiness for use in emergencies. Regular maintenance helps maintain the effectiveness of the extinguishers and ensures compliance with safety standards.

Fire Extinguisher Maintenance:

Here are the steps and procedures for maintaining fire extinguishers:

  1. Regular Inspection:
    • Fire extinguishers should be inspected monthly to ensure they are in good condition. This process includes:
      • Verifying that the extinguisher is in its designated location.
      • Ensuring the pressure is within the correct range (checking the pressure gauge).
      • Checking for any damage or cracks on the extinguisher.
      • Inspecting the seal to confirm that the extinguisher has not been used.
  2. Annual Maintenance:
    • Complete maintenance of extinguishers should be conducted annually by certified professionals. This maintenance includes:
      • Discharging and thoroughly cleaning the extinguisher.
      • Inspecting internal components such as the valve, hose, and cylinder.
      • Replacing any damaged or missing parts.
      • Refilling the extinguisher with the appropriate extinguishing agent.
      • Conducting a pressure test to check for leaks.
  3. Refilling After Use:
    • After every use, even if the extinguishing agent is not completely consumed, the extinguisher should be refilled. This ensures it is ready for use at any time.
  4. Hydrostatic Testing (Every 5-12 Years):
    • Hydrostatic testing is performed on fire extinguishers to ensure the cylinder’s integrity and its ability to withstand pressure. This test is conducted every 5 years for wet and dry chemical extinguishers and every 12 years for those containing gaseous agents.
  5. Replacing Old Extinguishers:
    • If an extinguisher is old or significantly damaged, it is advisable to replace it with a new one. Extinguishers that exceed their lifespan (typically 10-15 years) may not be effective in emergencies.
  6. Maintenance Record Keeping:
    • A maintenance log should be maintained, including inspection and maintenance dates, as well as any observations or repairs made. This record can be kept in paper form or electronically.

Maintaining fire extinguishers contributes to the safety of the facility and individuals and is an essential part of the safety procedures approved by the civil defense.
